KITCHEN FITTINGS

Kitchen fittings and fixtures which allow access for the disabled and elderly are manifold, attractive and cost competitive these days, and are available for all areas of the kitchen.

Cabinets are designed to open at suitable heights for the users and use hinges and rollers which are light and sturdy and make it easy to open even heavy drawers. Roll–out shelves and drawers make access to the back of cupboards easy and avoid wasted space.

Cupboard doors are available in a large range of materials, finishes and colours which make the kitchen not only easy for the elderly and disabled to use, but attractive as well.

Hot plates can be protected with a guardrail or deep setback and the use of fire resistant finishes adjacent to and above the cook top, can increase safety. Similarly, heatproof bench tops or inserts on either side of oven and grill allow for rapid set down of hot dishes and trays.

Bench tops should be designed with rounded bench edges and corners, to prevent injury, and should be installed at a height suitable for the users. There are even units available which have work surfaces with adjustable heights.

Kitchen appliances must be located for safe and easy access. Cook tops should have front controls as they allow the burners and pots to be more spread out.

Taps can be difficult to operate for those with disabilities or age related conditions such as arthritis. There are many products available to overcome such difficulties such as remote control taps operated by infa-red or by a foot button or remote control.
